Though it is often concerns about cognitive health that seem to dog President Joe Biden, this week, there were worries about a noticeable increase in the amount of coughing and throat-clearing displayed by the president during recent public appearances, as the New York Post reports.
The issue seemed to really come to the forefront on Thursday when Biden delivered a speech in which he attempted to justify tax hikes as a way to pay for his massive $3.5 trillion reconciliation spending package, and he had to pause multiple times to cough and clear his throat.
In a White House media briefing shortly after those remarks, Kelly O’Donnell of NBC News asked press secretary Jen Psaki for an explanation and an update on Biden’s health status.
“Many of us were in the East Room watching the president, we’ve seen him on many occasions where he had a repeated cough. What is the situation with that cough and is it a concern,” O’Donnell inquired.
Psaki did her best to downplay the situation, saying, according to Fox News, saying, “I don’t think it’s an issue of concern. There’s a range of reasons why we need to clear our throat or have a light cold,” though she offered little else in terms of elucidation, other than to say that Biden’s doctor accompanies him when he travels and conducts regular health checks on the president. At 78 years of age, the president’s health status is, unsurprisingly, a topic of significant concern to many, and his propensity to suffer from coughing fits that interrupt his speeches has even given rise to a Twitter hashtag of #Bidencough, according to the Post.
When asked whether Biden was due for a comprehensive physical examination anytime in the near future, Psaki replied, “I know this is an understandable question. I don’t have an update. He will get one soon. And when he does, we will make sure you all are aware of it and get the information.”
Though Psaki may well have been perturbed by all of the questions about the president’s hacking, at least she wasn’t called upon to deny the worsening mental decline of the commander in chief that continues to be on display for all the world to see.
