Since taking office, President Joe Biden has been taking a series of controversial steps – often by way of executive order – designed to reverse the strong stance on immigration taken by the Trump administration over the preceding four years.
As Breitbart reports, the alarming ramifications of Biden’s actions are quickly becoming apparent, as evidenced by a video tweeted by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) showing a sizable contingent of migrants marching into the country at the border near Yuma, Arizona.
Attributing the recent influx of immigrants to Biden’s effective reinstatement of the “open border, catch and release policy” halted by former President Donald Trump, Johnson labeled the worrisome scene as “the tip of the iceberg,” and wondered how many of those crossing the border were positive for COVID-19. The recent moves by the Biden administration to undo many of the Trump administration’s successes on immigration have drawn a scathing rebuke from the former president, who referred to the current wave of migrants seeking entry to the United States as a “spiraling tsunami at the border” which is “overwhelming local communities, depleting budgets, crowding hospitals, and taking jobs from legal American workers.” Trump continued:
When I left office, we had achieved the most secure border in our country’s history.
UnderBiden it will soon be worse, more dangerous, and more out of control than ever before. He has violated his oath of office to uphold our Constitution and enforce our laws.
On Monday, the New York Post cited a Washington Post report revealing that Russell Hott, a senior official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told colleagues that totals of unaccompanied youth and families reaching the border this year “are expected to be the highest numbers observed in over 20 years.” Hott added that administration efforts to establish new tent-style facilities and rapid migrant processing centers “may not be sufficient to keep pace with apprehensions” of those attempting to enter unlawfully.
Even the White House has had to concede that it has not taken sufficient steps to discourage migrants from unlawfully entering the country, with Biden press secretary Jen Psaki admitting on Monday, “I would say its clear we need to work more on getting the message out and being very clear, now is not the time to come.”
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) appeared on Fox & Friends earlier this week and slammed the administration for its “amoral” mishandling of the escalating border crisis, saying:
They’ve literally turned detention centers – that are designed to turn people away at our borders – into reception centers.
What signal is that going to send?
The idea that the Biden administration could not foresee the logical consequences of softening U.S. border policies and is shocked by the number of illegal crossings that have since occurred certainly strains credulity, and only time will tell how much worse the situation will be allowed to get.
