Republican congressman slams DA George Gascon over radical new ‘diversion’ program

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon is once again under fire from the right, but this time, it’s for something far more disturbing than usual.

According to Fox News, a GOP lawmaker is calling out the radically progressive DA for his asinine “diversion” program, which essentially allows 17-year-olds who commit sex crimes or who rob someone at knifepoint to get out of any criminal charges altogether.

The program, known officially as Restorative Enhanced Diversion for Youth (REDY), was launched last month. But the situation took a turn when an internal memo he sent to his prosecutors, obtained by the Los Angeles Times, revealed disturbing details about the radical program.

In the memo, it was revealed that minors charged with “burglary, vehicle theft, assaults or robberies, arson or sexual battery,” can all be candidates for the REDY program.

While those charged with rape or murder aren’t eligible, apparently the way the memo is worded leaves open at least a slight possibility of those types of offenders also being recommended to the program on a case-by-case basis, and dependent on how the crime was committed.

California Republican Rep. Mike Garcia is already speaking out in an effort to convince Gascon to step down from his position, claiming Gascon seems to favor criminals over the victims.

“I’d like for him to step down. He’s not going to change his ways if he’s truly interested in public safety,” Garcia said. “We’ll find someone who’s on the side of the victim, rather than the criminal.”

Garcia added: “It really subverts the Constitution in regard to due process. This effectively takes minors who have committed very serious felonies out of the court system before they’re even charged and gives them an opportunity to go into this restorative rehabilitation program.”

Undoubtedly, in California where crime already runs rampant, not appropriately punishing minors who commit such serious crimes will only likely lead to the same people committing crimes as adults, where they’ll be let off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist, at best.
