According to a new report from Politico, a federal prosecutor in Delaware made what many now view as a highly controversial decision to temporarily put the brakes on a criminal probe of Hunter Biden ahead of the 2020 election in order to prevent information about it from making its way in to the public sphere and potentially impacting the outcome.
The outlet reports that U.S. Attorney David Weiss, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, delayed taking any steps to secure search warrants or to issue grand jury subpoenas in an effort not to “alert the public to the existence of the case in the middle of a presidential election.”
A person close to the discussions at the time told Politico that “concerns about affecting the presidential election loomed large when Weiss entertained arguments about advancing the probe,” and the top prosecutor eventually agreed with Department of Justice officials who suggested it was better to remain cautious and not press on with the probe until the election was concluded.
As Breitbart noted, it was back in 2018 that Weiss’ office began probing the son of now-President Joe Biden after receiving a number of leads that included information related to his foreign business dealings.
Though the investigations initially focused on the possibility of money laundering as well as potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, scrutiny eventually turned toward whether the younger Biden engaged in criminal violations of federal tax law.
That Hunter Biden was the subject of a criminal investigation in Delaware is fact which did not make its way into the public arena until his father had been declared the victor in the presidential contest. It was only then that a statement was released by Hunter acknowledging – yet downplaying – the existence of the probe he asserted was centered on tax issues alone.
Former President Donald Trump and his supporters have long blasted the Justice Department’s actions with regard to Hunter Biden, often citing the fact that a laptop computer purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden which was abandoned at a Delaware repair shop had been in the FBI’s possession since 2019, as the New York Post famously reported last fall.
Just prior to the 2020 election, the Post detailed a cache of emails gathered from that very laptop which seem to connect Joe Biden to his son’s questionable business endeavors in Ukraine as well as in China. Notably, Hunter Biden himself has never disputed the authenticity of the apparently incriminating information contained on the computer, which even he has admitted could “certainly” be his.
Despite the fact that a number of Republicans have called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to conduct the now-resumed probe of the president’s son, those demands have gone unheeded, and with Joe Biden sitting in the Oval Office, it is easy to acquire the sinking suspicion that Hunter Biden’s catalogue of misdeeds will continue to go unpunished.
