Rep. Liz Cheney recites Trump tweet during Jan. 6 hearing, omits key context

The Democrat-led House committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021 unrest at the U.S. Capitol kicked off the first of a series of made-for-television hearings last week, and during Thursday’s installment, Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (WY) shamelessly edited the words of former President Donald Trump in order to further the panel’s agenda.

Cheney, a longtime Trump foe and one of two Republicans chosen by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to sit on the committee, delivered a dramatic reading – dripping with sanctimonious condemnation – of a tweet posted by the former president in the midst of that fateful day’s events, as Real Clear Politics reported.

“These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away form great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long,” Trump wrote, according to Cheney.

Then, however, the congresswoman dishonestly and strategically omitted from her recitation Trump’s further statement urging his supporters to “[g]o home with love & peace” and to “[r]emember this day forever!”

The aforementioned tweet reading was not the only time during Thursday’s spectacle in which Cheney may have taken liberties when it comes to adherence to facts and context, as she also claimed that Trump agreed with those who expressed a desire to harm then-Vice President Mike Pence over his role in certifying the electoral voters that put Joe Biden into office.

“Aware of the rioters’ chants to ‘hang Mike Pence,’ the president responded with this sentiment: ‘Maybe our supporters have the right idea. Mike Pence deserves it,’” said Cheney, without offering any evidence to back the claim, as the New York Post noted.

Trump himself issued a statement on Friday via his Truth Social platform explicitly denying the allegation.

“I NEVER said, or even thought of saying, ‘Hang Mike Pence.’ This is either a made up story by somebody looking to become a star, or FAKE NEWS!” Trump insisted.

It is quite clear that last week’s hearing and those yet to come are part of a desperate bid by the Democrats – readily aided by the likes of Cheney – to remove Trump from the political arena once and for all, and unfortunately, they see nothing wrong with twisting the truth and foisting outright fabrications on the American people in order to achieve that end.
