Rep. Devin Nunes formally resigns from Congress to head Trump media venture

Long known as a serious thorn in the side of Democrats including President Joe Biden, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) formally resigned from his post on Monday and is set to embark on a new role with former President Donald Trump’s new media and technology endeavor, as The Hill reports.

In officially informing the body of his decision, Nunes declared his 19 years in Congress representing constituents in the San Joaquin Valley to have been “the honor of [his] life,” but noted that he is moving on to accept “a new opportunity to fight for the most important issues” in which he believes.

According to the outlet, Nunes’ departing letter was read aloud Monday on the House floor, with his resignation slated to take effect just before midnight that evening.

Having been the top GOP member on the House Intelligence Committee, Nunes is leaving his influential position to become the CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group later this month, according to CNBC.

The Trump enterprise, according to reports, is set to include the launch of an online platform known as “Truth Social,” which aims to compete with Twitter and similar entities and describes itself as “America’s ‘Big Tent’ social media platform that encourages an open, free, and honest global conversation without discriminating against political ideology.”

At the time Nunes’ hiring was announced, Trump praised the soon-to-be-CEO as a “fighter and a leader,” adding, “Devin understands that we must stop the liberal media and Big Tech from destroying the freedoms that make America great.”

As The Hill noted, Nunes’ departure from Congress came as something of a surprise, given the fact that if, as many predict, Republicans reclaim control of the House, the legislator was poised to chair the Ways and Means Committee, a plum position from which he could wield considerable influence.

In the wake of Nunes’ announcement of his impending job change, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stated that Ohio Rep. Mike Turner would assume the outgoing congressman’s duties as House Intelligence Committee ranking member.

As staunch defender of Trump during his presidency, Nunes made a name for himself as someone willing to call out Democrat dirty tricks at every turn, and his unwavering commitment to holding particularly egregious characters such as Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) to account will certainly be missed.
