Progressives run out of patience with Biden

Though President Joe Biden acquiesced to a series of left-wing priorities immediately upon taking office, progressives in his party are showing increasing signs of frustration with the commander in chief as he begins to confront the realities presented by Democrats’ razor-thin legislative majority, as Politico reports.

From his first days in the White House, Biden appeared fully on board with many of the radical left’s most substantial demands, including reversing Trump-era immigration policy, blasting voter integrity laws as being reminiscent of “Jim Crow,” and pushing massive amounts of social welfare spending.

However, it now appears that nothing is ever enough when it comes to appeasing the far-left faction within his own party, as progressives are voicing their displeasure with what they perceive to be the slow pace of progress in several other realms of concern.

As the Wall Street Journal notes, a growing chorus of radical liberals in Congress are speaking out on issues including funding for increased Capitol security, police reform, and military aid to Israel, threatening the party unity necessary to secure passage of far-reaching infrastructure spending and other items on Biden’s own wish list.

The administration’s stance on Israel has become a substantial bone of contention within the Democrat Party in recent weeks, with far-left legislators seeking to thwart a $735 million sale of weapons to the Jewish state amid ongoing conflict with the Palestinians. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) all working in opposition to the deal, as USA Today noted.

Policing reform is yet another initiative which has highlighted an emerging gulf between the administration and the far-left faction of his party. While Biden stated last month that he wanted to have sweeping legislation in this area on his desk and ready to sign by the end of May, the administration has largely deferred to Congress in shaping the eventual bill, drawing the ire of Democrat Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Cori Bush (D-MO), among others.

In yet another clash between moderates and progressives, just last week, members of the so-called far-left “Squad” nearly succeeded in scuttling a Capitol security spending measure championed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), saying, “we cannot support this increased funding while many of our communities continue to face police brutality while marching in the streets, and while questions about the disparate response between insurrectionists and those protesting in defense of Black lives go unanswered.”

With new reports suggesting that Biden is poised to drop from his agenda a campaign pledge to cancel at least $10,000 in federal student loan debt per borrower, it seems all but certain that the rift between the president and progressive stalwarts such as Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) will only deepen in the coming days.

Whether progressive resistance will be sufficient to throw a real wrench into Biden’s plans in the coming months remains to be seen, but it seems clear that the initial honeymoon the president secured by kowtowing to the left in the early days of his presidency has come to an unceremonious end.

  3. If he was really the president he would have more Americans behind him on some of these issues. What would Occasional Cortex or Pocahontas know of anything beneficial to the American people? When you spin in you’re own little circle of coffee shop geniuses, the mire gets very stale.
