Vice President Kamala Harris can’t seem to catch a break, as multiple reports have emerged which suggest that her corner of the White House is in complete turmoil.
According to SFGate, in the wake of two damning reports last week from CNBC and Politico, in which both outlets quoted a number of anonymous White House staffers’ frustrations with the vice president, yet another leak has emerged from Axios that tells a similar story, lending credence to the idea that Harris’ office is not in good shape.
In the earlier reports, a number of Harris’ staffers and other anonymous White House sources described what sounds like an extremely hostile work environment, with the Politico expose highlighting a number of allegations of abuse and lack of support from no less than 22 current and former staffers, and other White House officials.
The latest round of leaks from Axios is perhaps the most troubling and impactful yet, as one anonymous Democratic operative interviewed by the outlet suggested that Harris shouldn’t be the “heir apparent,” or presumptive Democratic nominee in 2024 if President Joe Biden is a one-term president.
The unnamed Democratic source added that they don’t believe Harris could beat a Republican nominee in the 2024 race.
The source went on to tell Axios reporter Alayna Treene that “most Democrats” aren’t saying, “Oh, no, our heir apparent is f***ing up, what are we gonna do?’ It’s more that people think, ‘Oh, she’s f***ing up, maybe she shouldn’t be the heir apparent.'”
Adding to the vice president’s troubles include new reports that officials within the Biden administration are at odds with Harris’ side of the White House, with some Biden officials reportedly describing Harris’ operation as a “s***show.”
Not surprisingly, some of the most senior White House officials, like White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, pushed back on the reports with predictable spin, saying “The President’s trust and confidence in her is obvious when you see them in the Oval Office together.”
Given that such reports are being published by outlets known to be usually friendly to Harris — and the Biden administration in general — it certainly a cause for concern for Democrats. If the trajectory continues as it is, don’t be surprised to see Harris pushed aside early on while Democratic operatives prep a fresh face to represent the party in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary.
