In addition to FBI and Justice Department investigations over his handling of nursing homes during the early weeks of the COVID-19 crisis, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is now facing allegations of sexual harassment from former high-level aide Lindsey Boylan.
Amid these new claims, Meghan McCain, co-host of ABC talk show The View, slammed the mainstream media’s reluctance to cover Boylan’s accusations and said the embattled governor is a “pervert” who should “resign immediately,” as Fox News reported.
Boylan, formerly deputy secretary of New York’s economic development agency and a special advisor to Cuomo, came forth with sexual harassment allegations against the governor in December, supplementing them with greater detail in a piece posted to Medium earlier this week, as reported by CBS News.
According to Boylan, Cuomo repeatedly engaged in inappropriate conduct that included intentionally touching her back, legs, and arms, and going so far as to kiss her during a meeting in which only the two of them were present. Boylan also alleges that during a 2017 flight, Cuomo suggested that they play “strip poker.”
Though Cuomo has forcefully denied Boylan’s claims, the former top aide maintained in her Medium post that the governor’s administration has long been one in which “sexual harassment and bullying is so pervasive that it is not only condoned but expected.”
McCain, for her part, lambasted mainstream outlets for staying largely silent on the latest accusations against Cuomo and highlighted the glaring double standard routinely used to judge sexual harassment allegations. She asserted that the degree of scrutiny applied depends mainly on the political party to which the accused belongs.
In support of her position, McCain used Cuomo’s own words against him, reminding viewers of his public stance during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings. At that time, Cuomo assured “all survivors of sexual assault” that “we believe you, and we will fight for you.”
The lone conservative voice on the daily talk panel continued, saying that “by [Cuomo’s] own metric, believe all women, he is a pervert who has harassed women and he should resign immediately.”
Despite having attained the status of a bona fide media darling during the height of the pandemic, deepening revelations about a potential cover-up of the catastrophic failure of his own nursing home policy together with shocking claims of sexual harassment may yet amount to the perfect storm that forces Cuomo’s resignation.
