Left-leaning religious-based groups Faith in Public Life and Faithful America are calling for the removal of a Kansas Archbishop from a special position after he called out President Joe Biden for his stance on abortion, according to Breitbart News.
Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas is currently the chair of the U.S. bishops’ pro-life committee but some on the left don’t think he should be, after saying that Biden shouldn’t continue to call himself a “devout” Catholic with his pro-abortion stance.
Faithful America, on the other hand, has stated clearly that it is “not affiliated with any church or denomination,” but is “the largest online community of Christians putting faith into action for social justice,” and to that end, seems to be attempting to hold religious leaders accountable to social justice.
In their letter, the groups cited Naumann’s comments as “the latest sign that some U.S. Catholic bishops are out of step with Pope Francis.”
“It’s only a few months into Biden’s term, yet Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, KS, is already far more critical of the new president than he ever was of Donald Trump,” the letter stated.
“In a recent interview, Naumann even praised a South Carolina priest who bragged about denying Biden Communion on the campaign trail.”
Thus far, the petition has amassed nearly 20,000 signatures. Ironically, however, the group didn’t address the archbishop’s primary concern but did bring up former President Donald Trump, as liberals so often do.
The preamble to the signature page stated that “This focus on personal, single-issue, culture-war attacks might not be a surprise, but it is dangerous. From COVID-19 to climate change to family separation, Trump’s policies were so deadly that Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, KY, correctly called the ex-president ‘anti-life.’”
So, it appears that the non-religious “faithful” among us would prefer that religious leaders don’t offer religious advice if it is in contradiction with Biden.
