Vice President Kamala Harris announced Tuesday that she will be visiting the U.S.-Mexico border later this week, according to The Washington Examiner.
Harris and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will travel to the Southern border on Friday, according to White House officials.
While the White House did not immediately respond to the Examiner’s request for comment, news of the trip sparked questions of whether former President Donald Trump is right to take credit for her trip.
Almost exactly a week ago the former president
announced he would visit the Southern border at the invitation of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
“I have accepted the invitation of Texas Governor Greg Abbott to join him on an official visit to our Nation’s decimated Southern Border on Wednesday, June 30, 2021,” he said in a tweemail.
“The Biden Administration inherited from me the strongest, safest, and most secure border in U.S history and in mere weeks they turned it into the single worst border crisis in U.S history. It’s an unmitigated disaster zone.”
Trump campaigned on strong security at the border wall and his stance on illegal immigration is thought to be responsible for some relief that Customs and Border Patrol and others experienced thanks to measures like the one that caused asylum seekers to stay outside of the United States.
Despite Harris’s insistence that she would “lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle” dealing with the “root cause” of migration, she has received a lot of heat about not visiting the border. Trump, on the other hand, didn’t seem at all confused about the optics and made it clear he planned to visit the border to make sure there was as much mud on the Biden administration and praise on border security, as possible:
“Our Nation is now one giant sanctuary city where even dangerous criminals are being cut loose and set free inside the U.S interior on a daily basis,” Trump added. “If this weren’t bad enough, Biden and Harris won’t even tour the scenes of the wreckage they created, or come down and visit with the Border Patrol and [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] heroes risking their lives to defend our Nation at a time when the White House is doing everything it can to make their job totally impossible.”
