Harris is already failing in her handling of the border crisis

Just as the severity of the crisis at the southern border shows no signs of abating, neither does the Biden administration’s refusal to provide the kind of transparency about its decision making that Americans deserve.

In an apparent effort to dodge accountability over White House handling of the escalating migrant surge, Vice President Kamala Harris has failed to hold a formal press conference since being tapped by President Joe Biden to head the administration’s response, as the Washington Examiner reports.

Earlier this month, President Biden announced that Harris would lead the administration effort to address the situation at the southern border, saying, “When she speaks, she speaks for me,” as the Associated Press noted.

However, after continued silence from the vice president on the matter, White House press secretary Jen Psaki last week seemed to backtrack on Harris’ actual role, claiming that she was actually tasked only with tackling the “root causes” of the influx of migrants, not the controversial – and arguably inhumane – conditions in which they are being held, saying, according to the New York Post:

The vice president of the United States will be helping lead that effort, specifically the root causes – not the border, there’s some confusion over that.

Harris’ lack of media availability comes after Biden himself set a conspicuous record of waiting until his 65th day in office to hold an initial press conference, adding to criticism about a broader lack of transparency within the administration.

Not only has Harris avoided holding a press conference at which she would surely be asked about the border crisis, she has also failed to appear on any of the network weekend news programs despite both Republican and Democrat lawmakers having done so after returning from their own trips to the border, as the Post further noted.

Even more frustrating for many is the fact that the mainstream media is once again displaying a startling lack of curiosity on the topic, with DePauw University professor Jeffrey McCall telling Fox News:

The traditional media thus far has not shown an interest in demanding transparency about the border crisis in general, and is apparently unwilling to challenge Harris even though she has assumed the key role in addressing the situation.

Media critic and Cornell Law School professor William Jacobson went further, stating to Fox News:

As the person put in charge of the border crisis, Harris should be answering questions about how the Biden/Harris administration has young migrant children packed into “cages” and enclosures, creating not only humanitarian relief problems, but also COVID superspreader locations.

However, now that even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has gone on record to declare current conditions for migrant detainees at the border “inhumane,” “horrifying,” “unacceptable,” and “barbaric,” Harris’ ability to continue eluding reporters regarding this growing disaster may be dwindling.
