In response to rumors that President Joe Biden quietly halted a government investigation into the possible origins of COVID-19, Republican Sens. Ron Johnson (WI) and Rick Scott (FL) have sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanding answers, as the Daily Caller reports.
The outlet obtained the communication in which Blinken is asked a series of questions and is requested to provide documents, names, and other information in connection to a State Department probe of how SARS-CoV-2 originated.
In their letter, the senators requested details related to reports that Biden and his team “shut down” an investigation into the emergence of COVID-19, including an examination of the notion that the virus may have gotten its start in a Wuhan, China laboratory. The reporting referenced by the lawmakers indicated that the defunct probe was the only one taking a serious look at the lab leak theory.
As a result, the senators are seeking details of why the State Department’s probe was stopped and who within the agency supported its termination. They are also seeking draft reports produced during the probe, additional documentation related to the decision making process affecting the continuation of the investigation, the details of any other investigations into COVID-19’s origins that may be taking place, as well as all State Department cables discussing the Wuhan Institute of Virology dating back to 2018.
Johnson emphasized to the Daily Caller that “The world needs to know the origin of the coronavirus. It is critical that this administration does its party by being transparent…All I’m asking for is the truth.”
Scott underscored the conflicting information Americans have received throughout the course of the pandemic about what may have set the cataclysmic chain of events into motion, remarking, “For nearly a year, the press and Washington Democrats said it was crazy to suggest that COVID-19 may have leaked from a lab. It’s about time President Biden acknowledges that the American people deserve answers,” adding, “Communist China is responsible for this pandemic. We must hold them accountable.”
For his part, Biden indicated this week that he had ordered the launch of a 90-day investigation into the lab leak hypothesis, as the New York Post reported, and that he anticipates a public release of those findings, once complete. He also implored the U.S. intelligence community to “redouble their efforts” in determining the true origins of the virus.
Adding urgency to the push for answers, on Wednesday the Senate unanimously passed a bill requiring declassification by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence of “any and all information relating to the potential links between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origin of the coronavirus disease,” as The Hill reported.
Echoing the sentiments of millions, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) – a key proponent of the measure – declared, “The American people deserve to know about the origins of the COVID-19. They deserve to know how this terrible pandemic that has ravaged the globe and our country, how it got started and what’s China’s role in starting it.”
