Vice President Kamala Harris was tasked by President Joe Biden in March with arguably one of the most difficult jobs possible — heading up the U.S. government’s response to the immigration crisis. While nobody expected her to solve the issue in a matter of a few months, many are now suggesting that it doesn’t even appear as if she’s trying.
According to the Daily Caller, a group of 56 Republican lawmakers made news over the weekend as they signed a letter, spearheaded by Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI), in which they urged Biden to replace Harris with someone capable of getting results and with someone who’s not afraid to get their proverbial hands dirty by taking a trip to the southern U.S. border.
“Despite being in the midst of a border crisis this country has not seen in two decades, Vice President Harris has not yet shown adequate interest in observing this crisis first-hand,” the Republicans wrote.
They dug in on Harris’ seeming refusal to take even a few hours out of her schedule for a trip to the southern border to speak with the federal law enforcement agents dealing with the surging crisis — a crisis that literally poses a grave threat to the safety of Americans across the country.
The @VP STILL hasn’t visited the border. You can’t truly know the situation until you speak with people on the ground. I and 55 of my colleagues sent this letter to @POTUS demanding her removal from this position because 180k encounters, a 21-year high, is unacceptable. pic.twitter.com/PJE0RpgTaV

The GOP lawmakers also hit Harris and Biden on their insistence that the crisis is almost a fully direct result of northward migration from a handful of Central American countries.
“Even if we assume that ‘root causes’ only stem from a migrant’s country of origin, the exclusive focus on Central American countries ignores the fact that we see many migrants attempting to illegally cross our southern border from countries all over the world,” they wrote.
Dialing up the pressure to task a capable person with the challenging leadership role, the Republicans warned Biden that America “cannot afford another minute of inaction” from the vice president, which was in reference to the alarming number of illegal immigrants who continue to rush the southern U.S. border.
While it’s extremely unlikely that Biden will comply with the Republicans’ urgent request, it’s still important that Harris continually be called out for her lack of progress on the issue. Maybe one of these days she’ll actually move the ball.
