Fox News notches ratings wins, tallies 4 of 5 most-watched cable shows

Former President Donald Trump has been said by many to have transformed the way cable news outlets cover the White House, and with his departure came much speculation about which networks would benefit most from the shift.

According to Mediaite, Fox News has had an especially strong run of late, featuring four of the five most-watched programs in all of cable television on Wednesday, as measured both by total viewers as well as those in the highly-prized 25-54 demographic group.

A particular bright spot in the lineup for Fox News was Tucker Carlson Tonight, which drew 3.14 million viewers that night, also ranking first in the critical demographic, according to Nielsen. The network’s talk panel program The Five came in third in total viewership for the day, Hannity took the fourth spot, and The Ingraham Angle came in fifth, completing the network’s impressive results.

The only non-Fox News program to appear in the top five cable news offerings on the night at issue was The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, which ranked second behind Carlson’s show.

Similarly impressive was Fox News’ success in drawing an audience for its live coverage of President Joe Biden’s Thursday afternoon press conference. The outlet pulled in 3.24 million viewers for the broadcast, the most of any cable news channel, according to Nielsen data reported by Forbes.

Interest in the Biden press conference among Fox News viewers did not stop once that telecast was over, as discussion of the event was a primary focus of that evening’s opinion shows. That evening, Tucker Carlson Tonight was the most-watched cable show, and The Ingraham Angle won the all-important demographic group, thanks in part to a phone interview with Trump, as Forbes also noted.

According to Fox News, MSNBC has found it particularly difficult to maintain high viewership in recent months, a fact many attribute to the fact that Trump is no longer in the Oval Office providing material from which the network’s liberal hosts can launch their daily attacks. The ReidOut, hosted by far-left pundit Joy Reid recently had its worst showing ever, falling to weekly lows in terms of total viewership as well as with the key demographic.

CNN has similarly shed significant viewership in recent weeks, with Americans in increasing numbers turning off shows such as Cuomo Prime Time. The program has gone from CNN’s most-watched offering in 2020 to suffering noteworthy ratings declines — dropping 42% with the key news demographic — amid the growing controversies surrounding host Chris Cuomo’s brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

There is indeed a delicious irony in the fact that without Trump to kick around these days, liberal outlets such as MSNBC and CNN have lost their raison d’être and are learning the hard way that you really don’t know what you’ve got until its gone.
