Sad news emerged on Thursday for the friends, loved ones, and admirers of Oleksandr Omelchenko, former mayor of the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv, who reportedly passed away from complications of COVID-19, according to Interfax Ukraine.
The news outlet noted that Omelchenko had been hospitalized recently for treatment of a substantial lung lesion resulting from COVID-19 infection, which apparently was a primary factor in his demise.
Word of Omelchenko’s death came in the form of messages posted by political colleagues of the 83-year-old veteran of numerous official posts in Ukrainian government circles.
Former member of parliament and president of construction firm Liko-Holding, Ihor Lysov, said on his Facebook page, “Today, Oleksandr Omelchenko has passed away. I offer deep condolences to the family and relatives over the irreparable loss. Eternal Memory.”
Current Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote about the death on Telegram, according to Ukrainian News, saying, “Today Oleksandr Omelchenko is gone… . The former mayor of the capital, the head of the Kyiv City State Administration, a Member of Parliament, a Member of the Kyiv City Council. San Sanych, as we called him, has always been energetic, with wise humor, advice from an experienced manager.”
Klitschko also lauded Omelchenko for his abiding love of Kyiv as well as the integral role he played in the city’s modern political history.
In addition to the aforementioned roles in local and regional government, Omelchenko also served as president of the Association of the Cities of Ukraine as well as the head of the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine.
Most recently, Omelchenko ran as a candidate for mayor of Kyiv in the 2020 election, and his party came in as the third most popular in the overall balloting, securing 14 representative seats. Though Omelchenko did not win the contest for mayor, having fallen to eight place in that particular race, he did claim a spot on the City Council.
In a career that saw him earn honors such as Hero of Ukraine, Order of the Badge of Honour, Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Honour of the Presidentof Ukraine, and more, Omelchencko clearly had a significant impact on all those around him and will be remembered fondly by many.
