Flashback: Pelosi says government can’t ‘require someone to be vaccinated’

Last week, President Joe Biden announced a set of sweeping COVID-19 vaccine mandates that could potentially ensare upwards of 100 million Americans, but mere months ago, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) – the leader of his own party – admitted that the federal government simply could not compel individuals to take the shots, as Breitbart notes.

Pelosi was asked during a press conference in late April about the possibility of implementing a vaccination requirement in the lower chamber of the legislature, and she was very clear about the limitations on her – and the federal government’s – authority to do such a thing.

“So – so here is the thing. We are – we cannot require someone to be vaccinated. That’s just not what we can do. It is a matter of privacy to know who is or who isn’t,” the House speaker declared.

Removing any doubt as to whether her comments were limited to her authority in respect to her lawmaker colleagues, Pelosi added, “So if we could, but we can’t require vaccinations for the Members, much less for the American people.”

The California Democrat was not the only high-profile voice suggesting that vaccine mandates were not on the cards, with President Joe Biden’s current chief medical advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci also having weighed in last summer by saying, “I don’t think you’ll ever see a mandating of vaccine, particularly for the general public

“If someone refuses the vaccine in the general public, then there’s nothing you can do about that. You cannot force someone to take a vaccine,” the esteemed Dr. Fauci added.

Biden himself, in enacting mandates for massive swaths of the American public, also engaged in a glaring reversal of his own proclaimed stance on the matter, having said in December of 2020, “No, I don’t think [vaccines] should be mandatory. I wouldn’t demand it be mandatory…”.

Now that the Biden administration is vowing to use the power of the federal government to force medical interventions on American citizens against their will, it is indeed instructive to revisit the very recent proclamations of the president and his allies that prove just how ill-advised and indeed illegitimate these mandates truly are.

Of course, given Biden’s desperation to turn the country’s attention away from the disastrous collapse in Afghanistan, rising inflation, and the ongoing crisis at our own southern border, it should come as no surprise that he and his Democrat Party enablers have found in COVID-19 the perfect vehicle through which to let their authoritarian tendencies run rampant – regardless of how hypocritical and politically craven these latest edicts may be.
