Fire caused explosion of container ship in one of the world’s largest ports

One of the world’s largest ports in Dubai was the scene of a container ship fire according to a report in The Daily Caller

The fire prompted an explosion, which took place late Wednesday and caused panic in the United Arab Emirates’ largest city.

Social media lit up with videos of the fire bursting from the ship, which was docked at Jebel Ali Port. The explosion also caused literal shockwaves that shook nearby buildings and broke windows up to 15 miles away.

Jebel Ali Port is not only one of the biggest ports in the world, but is the largest in the Middle East, and the explosion was massive, according to The Associated Press’s report.

According to Dubai Media Office Director-General Mona Al Marri the explosion was a natural accident due to the flammable materials inside of one of the containers on the ship.

Al Marri also told Saudi news outlet Al Arabiya that the ship’s crew was entirely evacuated before the explosion took place.

The Dubai Media Office shared video and images on social media that showed firefighters from the Dubai Civil Defense force fighting the fire and covering other containers with water to fend of further damage.

No deaths or injuries have been reported, according to Dubai’s Media Office and authorities said early Thursday local time that the fire was under control.

According to the Daily Caller, Maj. Gen. Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi told reporters the fire was under “full control” and cooling just hours after the initial explosion.
