Federal Judge allows suit against Marjorie Taylor Greene to move forward

A federal judge has ruled that a suit against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) can go forward with its attempt to disqualify her for reelection due her connections to the Jan. 6 2021 Capitol Hill riots.

According to The Washington Times, the suit was brought by a group of voters who brought their legal challenges last month to Georgia’s Office of the Secretary of State, claiming that Greene supported an insurrection and thereby disqualified herself to run for reelection due to alleged violation of the 14th Amendment.

Greene has herself filed a suit requesting that the judge declare the law that the voters used to challenge her candidacy, unconstitutional. Greene claims that state officials should be prohibited from enforcing the law.

However, U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg, an Obama appointee, has denied Greene’s request and cited her failure to meet the “burden of persuasion” in her filing, allowing the voter’s claim to go forward.

In addition to the suit brought against Green, several other far-right Republican lawmakers were also targeted by groups who attempted to revoke their ability to run for office again due to their objection to the certification of the 2020 election results for President Joe Biden.

North Carolina Republican Madison Cawthorn was one of the Republicans targeted by liberals who looked to bar him from reelection, however, U.S. District Judge Richard Myers, a Trump appointee, blocked the effort to remove Mr. Cawthorn from the ballot.

Social media users responded negatively to news that the suit against Greene would go forward with some calling it voter suppression and others saying it was meant to set precedent for other cases to move forward:

“This is actual voter suppression,” said one user responding to The Washington Times post about Greene’s case. “They don’t want to allow voters to vote for the candidates they want. It’s how Dems are trying to manipulate elections because they can’t get people to vote for them with good policies-everyone can clearly see how they’re destroying our economy, foreign policy, and even free speech.”

“This is not so much about MTG (no, not mortgage!) as it is about Trump,” said another. “If this is successful, not only will it set a dangerous precedent for our republic, but it will be used as a springboard to disqualify Trump. This is the sole purpose of the Jan. 6th committee, i.e., to label Trump an “insurrectionist” to preclude his candidacy under the 14th Amendment, Sec. 3. I am certain of this.”
