In disturbing developments out of New York, over the last few days, the FBI has raided the homes of journalists affiliated with conservative investigative reporting outlet Project Veritas, including the residence of its founder, James O’Keefe, as part of a federal probe into an allegedly stolen diary belonging to President Joe Biden’s daughter, Ashley, according to Fox News.
As WNBC in New York reported, federal agents conducted searches at the home of individuals linked to Project Veritas on Thursday, several months after the enterprise was provided with a diary by someone who claimed it was the property of Ashley Biden. The raid of O’Keefe’s Mamaroneck home occurred Saturday morning.
In response to the initial raids, O’Keefe posted a video message explaining that his group had been issued a grand jury subpoena in regard to prior contact made by tipsters who said they had found Ashley Biden’s diary abandoned in a room and that it contained “explosive allegations” about her then-candidate father.
Ultimately, Project Veritas did not publish the diary, in part due to an inability to authenticate it, and that prior to the FBI raids, the group was in contact with the Department of Justice and “voluntarily conveyed unassailable facts” demonstrating its lack of participation in any criminal intent or activity.
“Our efforts were the stuff of responsible ethical journalism,” O’Keefe said, adding, “and we are in no doubt that Project Veritas acted properly at each and every step.”
Emphasizing the seemingly outsized federal response to the situation, O’Keefe stated, Project Veritas gave the diary to law enforcement to ensure it could be returned to its rightful owner. We never published it. Now, Ms. Biden’s father’s Department of Justice, specifically the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, appears to be investigating the situation, claiming the diary was stolen.”
Surely echoing the thoughts of countless of Americans, O’Keefe declared, “it begs the question: In what world is the alleged theft of a diary investigated by the President’s FBI and his Department of Justice? A diary?”
Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett joined the chorus of those questioning the propriety of these raids, noting that even if Ms. Biden’s diary had been stolen, that would amount to a state crime, not a federal one, and that this investigation now involves an “enormous conflict of interest” given that her father sits in the White House.
Troubling jurisdictional questions aside, the bizarrely heavy-handed investigatory show of force unleashed on Project Veritas over the last couple of days will undoubtedly trigger new speculation about what other dark Biden family secrets could be hanging out there waiting to be revealed.
