Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), continues to enjoy a surge in popularity given his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. That was evidenced once again this week as the governor fought and won a critical battle that has a massive impact on one of the state’s most important industries.
According to Breitbart, DeSantis challenged a directive from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which imposed overly strict rules regarding vaccinations for cruise lines. Though the battle has gone back and forth on several occasions, DeSantis emerged with a victory this week as a court reversed a previous stay on the CDC’s rules, essentially freeing cruise lines from the grips of the CDC.
For a state that depends on its numerous cruise ship ports to drive revenue, DeSantis recognized early on that the CDC’s restrictions on the industry were no longer necessary, given that the rules were imposed before vaccines and before COVID-19 case rates rapidly dropped.
A Tampa-based federal court sided with the governor in June, ruling that the restrictions, which amounted to requiring vaccine passports, “are likely unconstitutional and overstepping their legal authority.”
That victory was short-lived, however, as the liberal judges of the Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit issued a stay that kept the previous rules in place.
Fast-forwarding to this week, the tables turned in a big way. Florida “filed an Emergency Application to Vacate the Eleventh Circuit’s Stay on the Preliminary Injunction,” and in matter of hours, the appeals court reversed their stay, effectively freeing the cruise industry from being forced to comply with CDC-issued dictates.
“I’m glad to see the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals reverse its prior decision and free the cruise lines from unlawful CDC mandates, which effectively mothballed the industry for more than a year,” DeSantis wrote in a statement on the latest ruling.
DeSantis echoed his previous statements that while freeing the cruise industry in his state was important, the battle means so much more, as the CDC can essentially target any industry it chooses and completely cripple it. But with a new precedent set in the Florida case, that’ll be infinitely more difficult for the government agency to do in the future.
It’s no wonder why DeSantis continues to be one of the most highly regarded conservative governors in the nation, as he has proven time and time again that he’ll always fight to make sure that the residents of his state are able to exercise their constitutional freedoms, no matter what.
