DeSantis bolsters anti-woke bona fides with baseball facility funding veto

One of the main reasons Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is viewed as a rising star in the GOP is his ready willingness to take a stand against the woke virtue signaling that has become part and parcel of countless corporations, federal agencies, and other key groups, and he has once again shown his mettle in recent days with his veto of funding for a Pasco County baseball facility.

As The Hill reports, just last week, DeSantis gave his stamp of approval to a state budget last week, but also put a stop to the allocation of money for a practice facility slated for use by Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays.

According to Fox News, the governor’s opposition to the appropriation stemmed primarily from a statement issued by the Rays organization in the aftermath of recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas calling for action on gun control.

The Rays posted their position on social media and declared that the aforementioned events “cannot become normal. We cannot become numb” and also pledged $50,000 to gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.

In the aftermath of his decision to veto the funds, DeSantis stated, “I don’t support giving taxpayer dollars to professional sports stadiums, period.”

He continued, “Companies are free to engage or not engage with whatever discourse they want, but clearly, it’s inappropriate to be doing tax dollars for a professional sports stadium and it’s also inappropriate to subsidize political activism of a private corporation.”

The baseball facility funding veto comes on the heels of DeSantis’ decision to support the revocation of the special taxation and self-governing status Walt Disney World has enjoyed in the state for decades.

That move came in response to Disney’s outspoken opposition to Florida’s new parental rights in education law, pejoratively referred to by opponents as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, with DeSantis explaining at the time, “You’re a corporation based in Burbank, California, and you’re going to marshal your economic might to attack the parents of my state? We view that as a provocation and we’re going to fight back against that.”

Given the Florida Republican’s demonstrated fearlessness when it comes to confronting wokeness wherever it rears its head, it is no surprise that growing numbers of Americans now agree with conservative commentator Jack Posobiec who enthusiastically tweeted over the weekend, “All Republican governors must DeSantify – at once!”
