Democrats cry for McCarthy’s resignation after he cracks harmless Pelosi joke

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was given a gift over the weekend and his response to the gift triggered a number of Democrats to issue hysterical, overly dramatic responses.

According to the Washington Examiner, during a dinner event, McCarthy was gifted an oversized gavel, courtesy of Tennessee’s Republican congressional delegation. The GOP House leader clearly jokingly made a reference to whacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) with it, which immediately elicited calls from House Democrats for his immediate resignation.

The gavel was not only an obviously oversized novelty version, but it was symbolic in the sense that most House Republicans are looking forward to McCarthy taking the reigns as speaker next year after the conclusion of the 2022 midterm elections, which Republicans are expected to sweep.

In addition, the gavel was custom engraved with the phrase, “Fire Pelosi.”

A journalist from a local Tennessee newspaper made headlines after reporting that McCarthy apparently said “It will be hard not to hit her with it, but I will bang it down,” upon receiving the gavel. Again, clearly a joke.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) was one of the first Democrats to take to Twitter to voice his call for McCarthy’s joke, demanding his resignation.

“Dear @GOPLeader McCarthy: Don’t you think America has had enough political violence? You should never be encouraging or threatening or joking about causing violence to anyone, including the Speaker of the House. You need to apologize for your statement, or resign,” Lieu wrote.

“Language like this led to violence and death at the United States Capitol. @GOPLeader knows his words carry weight,” tweeted Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), suggesting that McCarthy’s crack at Pelosi was akin to the violence that took place at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

The incident happened just days after Pelosi called McCarthy a “moron” after he challenged her reinstituted House mask mandate. McCarthy, as of this writing, doesn’t appear to be interested in resigning.
