Democrat from New Hampshire calls for border wall, infuriating White House

New Hampshire Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan visited the southern border, recording video in front of the border fence, lighting a flame of contention with party members who didn’t appreciate her highlighting the issues at the southern border.

According to a report by The Washington Times Hassan is running for reelection and she spoke with Border Patrol agents during her trip and was told that they needed three things to secure the border: more people, more technology and, most controversially, restarting wall construction. Following her meeting with the agents Hassan described it as the end to fill “certain gaps in physical barriers along the border.”

While Hassan’s trip might seem like a bit of a trip from her home state, she’s just one of a number of Democrats who are turning their attention the invasion of illegal aliens that are streaming through the southern border.

Included in that number are at least a half-dozen Democratic senators, all of whom are up for re-election in 2022 and all of whom are blasting Biden for his decision to end the Title 42 requirement.

Under Title 42, which was put in place during the pandemic, border emergency policies were enacted that allow the government to immediately deport someone who entered the country illegally, based on COVID-19 risks.

Due to recent moves by the Biden Administration, that allowance will be ended next month and massive amounts of those attempting to cross the border will be put into a lengthy court system that assesses potential asylum claims.

“They’re worried, and they realize this Title 42 was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said Rep. James Comer, a Kentucky Republican who made a trip to the border this month and confirmed the sense that illegal border crossings will get even worse when the policy ends.

Immigrants’ rights groups, however, are rushing to shore up support from Democrats, saying that Title 42 was blocking legitimate asylum claims by forcing those who might be escaping dangerous situations back across the border.

Included in that group is Juana Esquivel who serves as the digital director at the advocacy group America’s Voice was heard saying that Democrats were caving to Republicans: “Regardless of what Republicans and senators like Hassan and Warnock say, ending Title 42 is the right thing to do,” Ms. Esquivel said in an email to supporters.

“It was a slap in the face for us Latino immigrants,” said Eva Castillo, director of the New Hampshire Alliance for Immigrants and Refugees. “She could have talked about anything other than the stupid wall. You know what it is? We’re in New Hampshire. We’re not a border state,” Ms. Castillo said. “That’s not an issue for a New Hampshire incumbent senator to be running on. I’m sick and tired of people playing politics with immigration, on both sides. And it’s especially annoying when it’s the Democrats that are supposed to be friendlier to immigrants.”

But New Hampshire is leaning toward border security with it’s Republican governor joining a group of governors, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who are standing up for stronger border policies.
