The mystery of what in the world happened to 22-year-old Gabby Petito continues to perplex the nation.
That was especially true on Sunday when, according to The Washington Times, a deceased body was discovered in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest that the FBI confirmed matches the description of the missing woman.
During a shocking press conference on Sunday, FBI Supervisory Special Agent Charles Jones confirmed that the discovered body, which had already decomposed to some degree, was “consistent with the description” of Petito, who has been missing for a month but has captured national attention over the past week due to the mysterious circumstances involving her boyfriend, their family, and other oddities.
Jones also said at the press conference that he offered his condolences to the woman’s family, hinting that perhaps they’re more than confident that the body is hers. He also told reporters to “respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of their daughter.”
“As every parent can imagine, this is an incredibly difficult time for the family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We ask that you all respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of their daughter,” Jones said, according to The New York Times.
The campsite where the body was found, Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area, was closed off to the public during the investigation.
A cause of death has yet to be determined, as intensive forensic investigation presumably takes place to determine with certainty the identity of the body and how the deceased person lost their life.
“The cause of death has not been determined at this time. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we work through this process,” Jones said. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, though it’s unclear when the results of the examination will be made public.
Petito’s boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, remains missing, in what was one of the latest bizarre twists in the national story. According to ABC 7, his parents’ home was searched by the FBI on Monday, and his parents were escorted away in an FBI van.
