According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Biden administration is contemplating making payments of roughly $450,000 per person in compensation to immigrant families separated during the Trump era, in what many are calling the ultimate insult to hard working, law-abiding Americans.
The reporting from the WSJ indicated that the potential compensation was part of an effort by the administration “to resolve lawsuits filed on behalf of parents and children who say the government subjected them to lasting psychological trauma” during temporary separations required by former President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy.
Not surprisingly, it did not take long for Republicans to weigh in on the plan, with Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) blasting the move by stating, according to the New York Post, “Insanity. Rewarding illegal immigrants with hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars is the ULTIMATE insult to law-abiding citizens.”
Adding his voice to the chorus of opposition was House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who declared the idea “Pure insanity,” adding, “The Biden administration is reportedly looking to pay $450,000 to illegal immigrants who knowingly broke the law. It’s a slap in the face to our law-abiding citizens who wake up, go to work, and pay their taxes.”
Frequent Biden administration critic Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) added his take on Twitter, opining, “It’s unthinkable to pay a burglar who broke into your home for the ‘psychological trauma’ they endured during the crime. Yet the Biden administration wants to reward migrants who illegally entered our country with up to $450,000 each for just that reason.”
Underscoring what is perhaps the most infuriating comparison to which the proposed payments lend themselves was Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), who pointed out that the families of military service members killed in action receive insurance proceeds of just $400,000, while “Biden wants to pay illegal immigrants $450,000 for their hardship while breaking our laws,” adding, “Let that sink in.”
As could be expected, one of those most outraged by the prospect of sizable financial payouts to illegal immigrants is former President Trump himself, who stated on Friday that “it’s not even believable” that such a plan could ever be countenanced, as Fox News reported.
Touting the success of his administration’s immigration policies, Trump added, “One of the things we were doing is, you know, [family] separation, which was done before us. When people heard that, they didn’t come because if a parent fears they’re going to be separated, they didn’t come.”
The jaw-dropping nature of what the administration is considering is almost too staggering to be believed, but if Biden goes ahead and provides life-changing windfalls to those who intentionally broke this country’s laws, there may be no end to the profound political fallout his party will face as a result.
