Brian Laundrie’s lawyer revealed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head

The hype in the mysterious and captivating case of the missing — and now deceased — Gabby Petito hit the headlines once again this week as a lawyer for Brian Laundrie, her boyfriend and sole person of interest in her death, revealed shocking news.

According to the Washington Examiner, the Laundrie family’s attorney told the outlet that Brian Laundrie shot himself in the head, which officially ruled his death a suicide. His parents, with the help of authorities, discovered his remains at a Florida campsite in mid-October.

“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide,” attorney Steve Bertolino said this week in a statement.

The attorney added: “Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families.”

Laundrie had mysteriously vanished just days before his missing girlfriend, Petito, was found deceased at a Wyoming national park. Given the documented problems the young couple had, including police intervention during a domestic dispute, authorities kicked off a nationwide manhunt for Laundrie.

After Petito’s body was found, it wasn’t long before a coroner identified the cause of her death as a result of strangulation. At that point, federal law enforcement officers issued a warrant for Laundrie’s arrest, though it was based on a credit card fraud charge and not Petito’s tragic death.

The manhunt for Laundrie included not only federal, state, and local authorities, but also celebrities like Dog the Bounty Hunter, as well as scores of online detective groups who were credited with aiding the investigation through the use of crowdsourcing information and leads.

Interestingly, according to NPR, the case opened as a result of Petito’s strangulation hasn’t yet been officially closed, as Laundrie was never elevated to the status of a “suspect.”

While it’s tragic when anyone takes their own life, in this case, it’s probably safe to say that most people won’t lose much sleep over it, although if he was guilty of Petito’s murder, it would have been refreshing to see him brought to justice.
