Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford (D) was carcacked on, despite her aggressive support for police reform throughout her jurisdiction.
According to Breitbart News, the state senate leader and her husband were the victims of the crime on Tuesday evening in a suburban area of the city in the Broadview area.
CBS Chicago reported that around 9:45 p.m. three masked individuals who were driving a Dodge Durango took the state senator’s Mercedes Benz SUV at gunpoint.
The crime took place at the 2000 block of South 20th Avenue where Lightfoot and her husband were accosted and present when shots were fired. Both lightfoot and her husband were reportedly uninjured.
“First and foremost, I am thankful that my husband and I are alive and physically unharmed,” Lightford said in a statement reported by Fox News. “I am trying to process the trauma of what happened. I want to thank everyone who has offered their love and support. I want to especially thank Mayor Katrina Thompson and the Broadview Police Department for their quick and thorough response.”
Fox News reported that U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) was also carjacked at gunpoint in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
“Wednesday afternoon, at around 2:45 p.m., Congresswoman Scanlon was carjacked at gunpoint in FDR Park following a meeting at that location,” Scanlon’s office said in a statement.
“The Congresswoman was physically unharmed. She thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety.”
There has been an 80% increase in carjackings in 2021 the Philadelphia Police Department told FOX 29 earlier this month.
