Alec Baldwin ‘absolutely devastated,’ ‘canceling other projects’ after fatal shooting

Actor Alec Baldwin is reportedly “devastated” over his involvement in a shooting on the set of the film “Rust” that left one woman dead and a man in the hospital.

The shooting occurred last week when Baldwin apparently fired a prop pistol that turned out to be loaded with a live round, according to a police affidavit.

“The assistant director of the western film ‘Rust’ grabbed a prop pistol from a gray cart and handed it to the movie’s star, Alec Baldwin, shouting ‘cold gun!’ — which was supposed to indicate that it did not contain any live rounds, and was safe to handle around the crew huddled by the camera,” The New York Times reported, citing a Santa Fe County sheriff’s department affidavit.

“But the weapon fired when Mr. Baldwin pulled the trigger a few minutes later, discharging a live projectile that hit the director, Joel Souza, in the shoulder and struck the director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, in the chest, killing her,” the Times added.

An “absolutely devastated” Baldwin is now taking a break from acting, an unnamed source told People.

Baldwin hopes “to take some time to himself and re-center himself,” the source told the outlet, saying that he “is canceling other projects” for the time being.

“This was pretty devastating,” the source added. “This is how he handles difficult times. Whenever something bad happens, in the short term, he removes himself from [the] public eye.”

The source also provided some insight into Baldwin’s state of mind after the shooting.

The actor was “hysterical and absolutely inconsolable for hours” the source said, adding, “Everyone knows this was an accident, but he’s absolutely devastated.”

The source also said Baldwin plans to spend some time with his family while he figures things out.

“[Baldwin] is someone who really deeply cares, so he can be very hard on himself,” the source said. “That’s true in general, in situations nowhere near as serious as this. But in this situation, it’s a whole other level because of the loss of life involved.”

“It’s going to take him time to figure all this out,” the unnamed person added. “He needs to take a while to himself, to be with his family.”

In a statement posted to Twitter, Baldwin said his “heart is broken” over the incident.

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and … I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family,” the actor tweeted.

“My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna,” he said.
